Wednesday’s topic is Reproductive Health and Rights: The Facts of Life and we’ll be kicking it off with a virtual Facebook conversation with experts from the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. This unit is in charge of preparing the official UN population projections that provide the basis for estimating the day when the world will welcome its 7 billionth citizen.
UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, commemorated United Nations Day and the launch of the 7 Day Countdown by visiting the New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math Upper School. He spent the day with 500 students, who are part of the demographic of people under 25 that make up nearly half the world population. Take a look at the slideshow above for pictures from the event.
Students were asked to think of innovative solutions to population growth and will be invited to present their ideas at the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, offices in the coming weeks.

One New Topic Each Day
Each day will be dedicated to a specific topic, so pick one of the topics below, and tell us how you or your organization is taking action in that specific area. We are hoping for nothing less than an explosion of positive stories of individuals and organizations making a difference in their communities and around the world.
The Executive Director of the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin gave a lecture at Harvard University on the challenges posed by population growth. Osotimehin discussed youth engagement, women’s education, and gender-based violence. Read the entire article from the Harvard Crimson here.
Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is one of the seven key issues of the 7 Billion Actions initiative. On October 13th - October 14th the EuroNGOs (a European network of non-governmental organizations that cooperate in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights, population and development), will hold a conference titled: “Future Perspectives on Development Cooperation - Putting Sexual and Reproductive Health on the Right Track,” and it will take place in Warsaw, Poland.

At the recent United Nations General Assembly, the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, said that in October our population will reach 7 billion. He went on to say that, should the 7 billionth baby be born a girl, she would likely be poor and might not grow up to be healthy and strong. He said, “if she is especially lucky, she will be educated and go into the world full of hopes and dreams.”
He ended on a positive note, and said 7 billion people, “need solutions; they demand leadership; the want us to act.” Read the entire speech here.
