Power of One: Justine Masika Bihamba

What’s your action?

My work centers around getting communities in the Northern Kivu Province to mobilize against sexual violence against women and young girls. I also work to get Congolese authorities and the international community to effectively fight against the root causes of sexual violence.

I chose this work because my passion for the women and young people who are suffering from this human cruelty is so great that I dream of contributing to the mobilization of communities against the violence, as well as getting Congolese authorities to focus on the causes and not the consequences of the sexual violence.  My belief/conviction is that I dream of a Congo where all women have the right to dignity.

Power of One: Jill Sheffield, President, Women Deliver

Watch the video interview with Jill Sheffield, president of Women Deliver, a global advocacy organization focused on providing better healthcare for women, reducing maternal mortality and making sure people in developing countries have access to reproductive health.

In the video, Sheffield talks about the story of meeting a young mother in an outpatient clinic in Nairobi. Having gone through 11 pregnancies and bearing 6 children already, the woman was denied access to contraceptive services because she did not have her husband’s signature for permission.

Noted as the encounter that “sealed her fate,” Sheffield went on to continue a long career in advocacy and non-profit work on the behalf of women.

Power of One: Jeffrey Sachs

Watch this Video: Interview with the Director of the Earth Institute, Columbia University

Watch the video interview with Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, as he discusses the lack of awareness around what 7 billion people means for the future of our planet, as well as his hopes for how technology can help meet our challenges.

"There is a view that is widespread, that needs to be addressed. And that view is that population doesn’t really matter, that the Earth can just continue to support more and more people…So why worry? That view is wrong and is a dangerous misunderstanding."

What’s your action?

I am raising money for Charity Water because I can help improve the desperate need for public access to clean water.

Why do you act?

Five years ago, I was in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the city of Goma, and witnessed the water crisis as citizens – mostly women and children – gathered their source water from Lake Kivu. The lake sits on an active volcano and as a result has high levels of natural methane, which in some places is so strong it causes asphyxiation. The lake also holds the bodies of countless victims of the 1994 genocide in neighboring Rwanda. Despite this, it’s what people were using for drinking, for preparing food, for bathing and I can’t accept that when there’s an opportunity to make a difference.

Power of One: Dr. Luc De Bernis, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.

Listen to this interview: The need for healthy mothers in a world at 7 Billion.

Without healthy mothers, communities cannot thrive.  Every day more than 1,000 mothers die in childbirth. The death of a mother is a fundamental loss to her family and community. It disrupts not only the development of her children but also her community. In this audio interview Dr. Luc De Bernis, a senior maternal health advisor at UNFPA, talks about how maternal health cuts across all major social issues.  He says the work he and his teammates do around the world to provide greater access to sound maternity care for every pregnant woman is not just about ensuring the well-being of mothers but entire communities.
